Your book list is going to get a bit longer.

For 2015, we want to shine a light on a few diverse authors whom everyone should know. Though not perfectly comprehensive, we’ve highlighted writers who demand your attention. Some have been around for a while and are finally on the rise, while others just made their debuts in 2014.

While not all of these people are coming out with new work in 2015, here are 10 authors you should definitely read in the new year.

MK Asante

In 2013, MK Asante wrote a memoir called Buck, which detailed the Nigerian native’s youth in the grime-riddled streets of Philadelphia. He’s currently a fellow at the Sundance Feature Film Institute, working on the book’s film adaptation.

Asante has also released three books of poetry and directed three documentaries, in case you want to feel bad about your own creative output.

UK-based author Nikesh Shukla is just like us — obsessed with the Internet.

This year, the author released his meta, zeitgeist-y second novel, Meatspace, a comical meditation on loneliness about a social media-obsessed struggling author.

To promote the book, Shukla and his friend Nick Hearne, a graphic artist, attached a GoPro camera a weather balloon carrying a lamb chop-wielding fork. The resulting footage is pretty phenomenal.
